More and more people use mobile devices to access online content, so the need for mobile-friendly websites is ever increasing. To meet this demand, the organization that handles the generic top-level extensions, ICANN, established the .MOBI domain extension in 2005. The first registrations were enabled in September 2006, and the intention behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it have to comply with specific terms. In other words, all .MOBI websites are required to be designed to be viewed flawlessly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” created by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the .MOBI Registry organization. These incorporate how a site is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.
